The Cheshire Cheese Cat by Carmen Agra Deedy
Skilley, an alley cat with an embarrassing secret, longs to escape his
hard life dodging fishwives brooms and carriage wheels and trade his
damp alley for the warmth of the Cheshire Cheese Inn. When he learns
that the innkeeper is looking for a new mouser, Skilley comes up with an
audacious scheme to install himself in the famous tavern. Once
established in the inn, Skilley strikes a bargain with Pip, the
intelligent mouse-resident, and his fellow mice. Skilley protects the
mice and the mice in turn give to Skilley the delectable Cheshire cheese
of the inn. Thus begins a most unlikely alliance and friendship. The
cat and mouse design a plan to restore Maldwyn wounded raven and
faithful guard in the service of Queen Victoria to his rightful place in
The Tower, but first they must contend with a tyrannical cook, a
mouse-despising barmaid, and an evil tomcat named Pinch. Will the famous
author suffering from serious writer s block who visits the Cheshire
Cheese pub each day be able to help?

Close to Famous by Joan Bauer
Twelve-year-old Foster McFee and her mother leave Memphis in the middle of the night, fleeing the mother’s abusive boyfriend. When she and her singer mother relocate to a tiny, rural West Virginia town, they discover a friendly and welcoming population of delightfully quirky characters. Foster finally learns to read from a reclusive, retired movie star; markets her baked goods at Angry Wayne’s Bar and Grill; helps tiny but determined Macon with his documentary; and encourages her mother to become a headliner rather than a backup singer, all the while perfecting her baking technique for the time when she gets her own cooking show like her TV idol, Sonny Kroll. ~Debbie Carton from Booklist

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin
In this enchanted and enchanting adventure, Minli, whose name means “quick thinking,” lives with her desperately poor parents at the confluence of Fruitless Mountain and the Jade River. While her mother worries and complains about their lot, her father brightens their evenings with storytelling. One day, after a goldfish salesman promises that his wares will bring good luck, Minli spends one of her only two coins in an effort to help her family. After her mother ridicules what she believes to be a foolish purchase, Minli sets out to find the Old Man of the Moon, who, it is told, may impart the true secret to good fortune. Along the way, she finds excitement, danger, humor, magic, and wisdom, and she befriends a flightless dragon, a talking fish, and other companions and helpmates in her quest. With beautiful language, Lin creates a strong, memorable heroine and a mystical land. --Andrew Medlar from Booklist
